What Is CHIPENET-MIB?

CHIPENET-MIB manages Ethernet interface configuration and traffic statistics on Chipcom (3Com) modular hub and switch platforms. It exposes a per-network-ID Ethernet statistics table covering received/transmitted frame and octet counts, multicast/broadcast frame counts, and a range of Ethernet error counters such as oversized frames, alignment errors, FCS errors, runts, and local collisions. This makes it directly useful for hardware-level link health monitoring: rising FCS/alignment errors or runts on a given Ethernet segment point to a cabling or NIC problem, while a jump in local collisions suggests a duplex mismatch or overloaded segment. It supplements the standard IETF Ethernet-like interface/RMON statistics conventions with Chipcom-specific per-net counters. It is deployed on legacy Chipcom/3Com Ethernet hub and switch chassis in campus LAN environments. Engineers can download the CHIPENET-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CHIPENET-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. An administrator would poll olEnetStatsTable/olEnetStatsEntry, keyed by olEnetStatsNetID, to compare olEnetStatsFramesRcvdOks and olEnetStatsOctetsRcvdOks against error counters like olEnetStatsFCSErrors, olEnetStatsAlignmentErrors, and olEnetStatsRunts. A sustained rise in olEnetStatsFCSErrors or olEnetStatsRunts on a particular network segment typically signals a bad cable or failing transceiver, while a rise in olEnetStatsLocalColls suggests a duplex mismatch or an overloaded shared segment. olEnetStatsFrameTooLongs would flag devices sending oversized frames, useful for catching a misconfigured jumbo-frame host.
