Category: ATM, Vendor: Nortel

Description: Manages IP multicast routing and group membership on Nortel Centillion ATM switch platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CENTILLION-MCAST-MIB?

CENTILLION-MCAST-MIB manages IP multicast routing and IGMP group-membership behavior on Nortel Centillion ATM switch platforms, part of Nortel's legacy campus ATM switching product line. It exposes per-VLAN IGMP configuration (pseudo-query and IRAP-query behavior, IGMP support enable, maximum group count) and IGMP timer settings (e.g., robustness) via indexed tables keyed by VLAN ID, alongside broader VLAN and multicast protocol-group registration objects. This MIB is used to monitor the configuration and operational status of multicast forwarding on each VLAN: whether IGMP snooping/querying is enabled and functioning, how many multicast groups are active against the configured maximum, and whether IGMP timer parameters are tuned appropriately, which is chiefly software-configuration and protocol-state monitoring rather than classic hardware sensors. It naturally depends on the standard IETF IGMP-MIB and relates to Nortel's broader Centillion VLAN/switching MIB family for VLAN identification. It was deployed in enterprise campus networks running Nortel Centillion ATM LAN-emulation switches supporting multicast video/data distribution, and administrators maintaining these legacy switches can still find a CENTILLION-MCAST-MIB download to load into a modern MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CENTILLION-MCAST-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nortel Centillion ATM switch

Monitoring Examples

An operator walks igmpGeneralConfigTable by igmpGeneralConfigVlanId to check igmpGeneralConfigIgmpSupport and igmpGeneralConfigMaxGroup for a given VLAN, confirming multicast is enabled and hasn't hit its configured group ceiling. Cross-referencing igmpTimerConfigTable's igmpTimerConfigTimerRobustness against observed group churn can reveal whether IGMP queries are too infrequent for a VLAN with many joins/leaves, causing stale forwarding state. If igmpGeneralConfigPseudoQuery or igmpGeneralConfigIrapQuery is misconfigured on a VLAN, multicast streams (e.g., video distribution) may fail to reach downstream ports despite the switch reporting up.

What Can Be Monitored

  • IGMP support enabled per VLAN
  • maximum multicast group count
  • IGMP query mode (pseudo/IRAP)
  • IGMP timer robustness setting
  • active multicast group membership
