Category: ATM, Switch Management - General

Description: Manages switch ATM interface configuration, virtual circuit state, and ATM cell transport.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SWITCH-ATM-MIB?

SWITCH-ATM-MIB is a MIB module for managing Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) support on a network switch, covering interface configuration, virtual circuit/virtual path state, and cell transport, part of the legacy ATM switching technology area. The module description notes it assumes a single virtual path identifier (VPI) per interface determined by the underlying software rather than exposed as a table index, indicating the module focuses on virtual channel-level rather than full VP-switching configuration. No specific object names were extracted, but ATM switch MIBs of this kind typically expose per-port ATM interface parameters, connection/VC admission state, and cell-layer statistics. This data would be used to monitor hardware status of ATM interface cards and the operational state of virtual circuits carrying traffic, which is important for detecting cell loss, misconfigured VCs, or interface faults. It likely depends on or parallels the IETF ATM-MIB (RFC 2515) conventions for standard ATM management objects. It is deployed on switches supporting legacy ATM transport, common in older carrier and enterprise backbone networks, making this SWITCH-ATM-MIB reference useful for administrators maintaining legacy ATM equipment.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SWITCH-ATM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • ATM-capable network switch

Monitoring Examples

No sample objects were available for this module, so a concrete monitoring scenario using real object names cannot be constructed; based on the module description, an admin would typically expect to poll a per-interface ATM configuration table and a virtual circuit state table to detect VC failures or cell-layer errors, but specific object names cannot be confirmed from the available data.

What Can Be Monitored

  • ATM interface configuration (unconfirmed - no objects available)

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using atmxLayerStatsTxCells OID:

Select an ATM-capable network switch, legacy ATM transport (interface/virtual-circuit status) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type atmxLayerStatsTxCells into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The total number of successfully transmitted cells. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
