Category: ATM, VLAN and Bridging, Vendor: Nortel

Description: Manages the forwarding database (FDB) and MAC address table on Nortel Centillion ATM/LAN switch platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CENTILLION-FDB-MIB?

CENTILLION-FDB-MIB is a Nortel (Bay Networks) private MIB for the Centillion series of ATM/LAN switches that manages the forwarding database (FDB) — the MAC address table used to switch frames to the correct port. It exposes the FDB table itself along with aging-timer and flush controls, covering the switching/forwarding-plane configuration and state category rather than hardware sensors. Its monitoring value is primarily on the software/forwarding-plane side: examining learned MAC addresses, their associated card/port/interface index, and entry type (dynamic/static/group) to verify correct address learning and to detect anomalies like MAC flapping, table exhaustion, or stale entries when combined with the remote aging timer setting. As a switching MIB it complements standard bridge MIB (BRIDGE-MIB) concepts even though it is a Nortel-private extension. It is typically deployed on Nortel Centillion ATM/LAN switches in campus/enterprise networks of the era, where CENTILLION-FDB-MIB SNMP monitoring helps confirm MAC address learning and detect flapping or table-exhaustion issues.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CENTILLION-FDB-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nortel Centillion ATM/LAN switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would walk the fdbTable/fdbEntry to see learned fdbAddress entries mapped to fdbCard, fdbPort, and fdbIfIndex, checking fdbType to distinguish fdbLocal, fdbStatic, or fdbGroup entries. The fdbRemoteAgingTimer controls how quickly dynamic entries age out, and fdbTableFlush lets an operator clear the table; a MAC address appearing on multiple ports in quick succession would indicate a MAC-flapping/loop condition, while a rapidly filling FDB table could indicate a MAC-table exhaustion issue.

What Can Be Monitored

  • MAC address forwarding table entries
  • MAC-to-port/card mapping
  • FDB entry type (static/dynamic/group)
  • FDB aging timer
  • FDB table flush events
