Category: Device Management

Description: Monitors Veritas/Symantec Backup Exec media server, providing backup job status, error counters, and tape device information.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Backup-Exec-MIB?

Backup-Exec-MIB is a vendor MIB for Veritas/Symantec Backup Exec, an enterprise backup application, used to monitor the status of a Backup Exec media server and its associated backup infrastructure. It exposes data centered on backup job execution results, error and warning message counters, and tape/media device status rather than networking or interface data. Its core purpose is software and job-level status monitoring: administrators track whether scheduled backup jobs succeeded or failed, review error message text/severity, and confirm that tape drives or media are functioning, effectively substituting for direct log-file inspection via SNMP. It is a standalone vendor-specific MIB with no significant dependency on other standard MIBs, since its message/event object model is self-contained. It is typically deployed on Windows servers running Backup Exec in enterprise data centers where SNMP-based NMS tools are used to alert on backup failures alongside other infrastructure monitoring. Engineers can download the Backup-Exec-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Backup-Exec-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Windows server running Veritas/Symantec Backup Exec media server
  • backup infrastructure with attached tape/media devices
  • Veritas Backup Exec media servers

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll or trap-listen on the messageobject to capture Backup Exec job completion and error messages as they are generated, looking for failure or warning severities that indicate a backup job did not complete successfully. Repeated error messages referencing the same job or tape device would flag a failing tape drive or a job that consistently overruns its backup window, prompting the admin to escalate the underlying media or scheduling issue.

What Can Be Monitored

  • backup job status
  • backup error/warning messages
  • job completion notifications
  • tape/media device status
