Description: Provides host resource management objects including storage, process, and device tables for FreeBSD bsnmpd.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is BEGEMOT-HOSTRES-MIB?

BEGEMOT-HOSTRES-MIB is a FreeBSD-specific MIB, part of the "begemot" bsnmpd agent family, supplementing the standard HOST-RESOURCES-MIB with additional host-resource management controls. It exposes update/refresh-control objects for storage, file system, disk storage, network, and installed/running software tables, plus a package directory location. Its monitoring value lies in governing how current the underlying HOST-RESOURCES-MIB data is, thereby supporting monitoring of disk/storage capacity and installed/running software inventory on a FreeBSD host by keeping those tables refreshed at a useful rate. It explicitly extends and depends on the standard IETF HOST-RESOURCES-MIB rather than replacing it. It is used on FreeBSD systems running bsnmpd, common in FreeBSD-based routers, firewalls, and appliances. Engineers can download the BEGEMOT-HOSTRES-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BEGEMOT-HOSTRES-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • FreeBSD-based host or appliance running bsnmpd

Monitoring Examples

begemotHrStorageUpdate, begemotHrDiskStorageUpdate, and begemotHrFSUpdate control how frequently the corresponding HOST-RESOURCES-MIB storage/disk/filesystem tables refresh, while begemotHrSWInstalledUpdate and begemotHrSWRunUpdate control refresh of installed and running software inventories. An admin lowering begemotHrDiskStorageUpdate to refresh more often would catch a rapidly filling disk partition sooner via the standard hrStorageTable, revealing an impending out-of-disk-space condition on the FreeBSD host.

What Can Be Monitored

  • storage table refresh interval
  • disk storage update interval
  • file system update interval
  • network table update interval
  • installed software update interval
  • running software/process update interval
