Category: ATM, Vendor: Ascend/Lucent

Description: Manages IMA hardware interface parameters and physical layer status on Ascend ATM equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ASCEND-MIBIMAHW-MIB?

This is a proprietary Ascend Communications (later Lucent/Nortel) MIB covering Inverse Multiplexing over ATM (IMA) hardware on Ascend ATM/WAN access equipment. It exposes hardware-level status of IMA physical links and groups, including link state, group membership, and physical-layer framing/alarm conditions. It is used directly to monitor the hardware health of ATM trunk interfaces — link up/down state, frame synchronization, and alarm conditions that reveal faulty cabling, misconfigured groups, or failed member links. It typically supplements the IETF ATM-MIB/IMA-MIB framework with Ascend-specific hardware registers rather than replacing it. It is deployed on Ascend MAX/TNT-style WAN access concentrators that aggregate multiple T1/E1 lines into a single logical ATM IMA group for ISP or carrier access networks, where ASCEND-MIBIMAHW-MIB SNMP monitoring reveals a member T1/E1 link dropping out of the IMA group before it degrades overall trunk capacity.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ASCEND-MIBIMAHW-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ascend/Lucent WAN access concentrator (MAX/TNT series)
  • ATM IMA aggregation equipment

Monitoring Examples

No sample runtime objects were captured for this module in the parsed source, so specific table names cannot be confirmed, but Ascend IMA hardware MIBs in this family typically expose an IMA link/group status table (an ascendIma*Table/Entry naming pattern) reporting per-link operational state and alarm indications. An administrator would poll this kind of table to detect an individual T1/E1 member link dropping out of an IMA group, which would show up as a state transition prompting investigation of cabling or clocking issues.

What Can Be Monitored

  • IMA link operational state
  • IMA group membership
  • physical-layer alarm/error indications
  • frame synchronization status
