Category: VPN and Security, Vendor: Ascend/Lucent

Description: Manages firewall session tracking, policy rules, and traffic filtering on Ascend equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ASCEND-MIBFWALL-MIB?

The ASCEND-MIBFWALL-MIB is a vendor-specific SNMP module from Ascend Communications (later part of Lucent) covering the built-in firewall feature of Ascend/Lucent MAX-series remote access and routing equipment. It exposes objects that track firewall session state, configured filtering policy rules, and traffic-matching statistics used to enforce access control on WAN and dial-up links. Because it centers on session tracking and policy enforcement, it is primarily a software/security-status MIB: an administrator uses it to confirm the firewall subsystem is active, to see how many sessions are currently tracked, and to check whether policy rule counters are incrementing as expected, which indirectly reflects the health of the device's packet-processing software. It depends conceptually on Ascend's proprietary enterprise MIB tree structure rather than any shared IETF firewall standard. It is typically deployed on Ascend/Lucent MAX access concentrators and routers used for dial-up or early broadband aggregation where a lightweight built-in firewall was needed. Engineers can download the ASCEND-MIBFWALL-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ASCEND-MIBFWALL-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ascend/Lucent MAX-series routers and remote access concentrators

Monitoring Examples

No sample objects were provided in the source data, so specific table or column names cannot be cited with confidence. In general terms, a typical monitoring workflow would poll firewall session-table entries and per-rule hit counters to verify inbound/outbound policies are actively matching traffic, where a stalled or zero session count during known traffic flow would suggest the firewall engine has stopped processing rules. Specific object identifiers are intentionally omitted here rather than invented.

What Can Be Monitored

  • firewall session count
  • active policy rule matches
  • traffic filtering statistics
