Category: VPN and Security, Vendor: Ascend/Lucent
Description: Manages IKE (Internet Key Exchange) phase negotiation and SA parameters on Ascend VPN equipment.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is ASCEND-MIBIKE-MIB?
ASCEND-MIBIKE-MIB is a proprietary Ascend module that manages Internet Key Exchange (IKE) phase negotiation state and Security Association (SA) parameters on Ascend VPN-capable equipment. It exposes configuration and negotiation-state data describing active and pending IKE phase-1/phase-2 exchanges and their resulting security associations. For monitoring, it is primarily a software-status tool: tracking whether IKE negotiations are succeeding, SAs remain valid, and identifying VPN tunnels stuck in a failed or renegotiating state, which is critical to diagnosing site-to-site VPN connectivity problems. It conceptually parallels the IETF's IPsec/IKE MIB work but is implemented as Ascend's own proprietary object tree rather than an RFC-standard module. It is deployed on Ascend routers/access units terminating IPsec VPN tunnels in enterprise or remote-access VPN deployments. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the ASCEND-MIBIKE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ASCEND-MIBIKE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Ascend VPN router/gateway
Monitoring Examples
This module's sample_objects list was empty, so the scenario below is inferred rather than grounded in confirmed object names. An administrator would check IKE SA table entries to confirm negotiated SAs are active and their remaining lifetime, and would investigate a tunnel showing repeated re-negotiation or SA failure as a sign of a misconfigured pre-shared key or peer unreachability. This data is normally correlated with interface and routing status to determine whether the underlying network path to the VPN peer is healthy.
What Can Be Monitored
- IKE phase-1/phase-2 negotiation state
- active SA count and lifetime
- VPN tunnel negotiation failures
