Category: Device Management, Vendor: Ascend/Lucent

Description: Manages flash memory partitions, firmware images, and storage on Ascend access equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ASCEND-FLASH-MIB?

ASCEND-FLASH-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from Ascend Communications (later Lucent) that manages the external flash memory ('socket') subsystem on MAX TNT, APEX, and Stinger access platforms running TAOS. The flashDeviceTable reports per-socket capacity and state — flashDeviceSize, flashDeviceUsed, flashDeviceState (inserted/removed), flashDeviceMaster, and flashDeviceFormatStatus — while the flashFileTable lists individual files per socket with flashFileSize, flashFileStatus (valid/invalid/open-read/open-write), checksum, version, and timestamp; a separate flashOperation group (flashOperationStatus, flashOperationCommand) drives and reports on format-card, TFTP upload/download, and config load/save operations, including a large set of TFTP- and flash-specific error codes. Because it exposes both capacity/state and live operation status, this MIB is useful for monitoring flash utilization (comparing flashDeviceUsed against flashDeviceSize), confirming a flash card is inserted and correctly formatted before a firmware or config transfer, and catching failed TFTP transfers via the detailed flashOperationStatus error enumeration. It depends on the parent ASCEND-MIB's flashGroup subtree and standard RFC1155-SMI/RFC1213-MIB imports, and is deployed on legacy Ascend/Lucent WAN access shelves that store firmware images and configuration files on removable flash cards; administrators can download the ASCEND-FLASH-MIB file to load it into their MIB browser when auditing flash storage on these platforms.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ASCEND-FLASH-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ascend/Lucent MAX TNT, APEX, and Stinger access platforms (TAOS)

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls flashDeviceUsed against flashDeviceSize for a given flashDeviceSocket and checks flashOperationStatus after initiating a tftp-upload; an errorTftpEtimeout or errorFlashResultNoSpace status would indicate the firmware transfer failed due to a network timeout or insufficient flash capacity.

What Can Be Monitored

  • flash device capacity used/free
  • flash device inserted/removed state
  • flash format status
  • flash file status (valid/invalid/open)
  • flash file checksum and version
  • TFTP/flash operation status and error codes
