Category: DSL and Broadband, Vendor: Ascend/Lucent

Description: Manages ADSL CAP (Carrierless Amplitude Phase) line configuration and performance on Ascend equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ASCEND-ADSL-CAP-MIB?

ASCEND-ADSL-CAP-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from Ascend Communications for managing ADSL lines using the CAP (Carrierless Amplitude Phase) modulation scheme on Ascend DSL access equipment, a technology used before DMT became the dominant ADSL standard. It is intended to expose per-line configuration (target data rates, margins) and performance/status objects for CAP-modulated ADSL circuits, consistent with the era's DSL line-management MIBs. Its monitoring focus is physical-layer hardware/line status: detecting sync loss, signal-to-noise margin degradation, or attenuation on a DSL loop that would explain a subscriber's connectivity or speed problems. It parallels the structure of early ADSL line MIBs (predecessors to the standardized ADSL-LINE-MIB) for CAP-specific line parameters. It was deployed on Ascend DSLAM/access-concentrator equipment at telco central offices during early ADSL rollouts. Engineers can download the ASCEND-ADSL-CAP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ASCEND-ADSL-CAP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ascend Communications ADSL DSLAM/access equipment

Monitoring Examples

No sample objects were provided for this legacy module. Based on its stated purpose, an administrator would typically poll per-line signal quality objects such as signal-to-noise margin and line attenuation to determine why a CAP-ADSL subscriber loop is running below its provisioned rate. A line reporting persistent loss-of-sync events would point to a physical wiring or CO-equipment fault needing dispatch.
