Category: Hardware and Environment, Vendor: Ascend/Lucent

Description: Manages chassis hardware inventory, slot occupancy, and card status on Ascend modular platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ASCEND-CHASSIS-MIB?

ASCEND-CHASSIS-MIB is a vendor-specific SNMP module from Ascend Communications (later absorbed into Lucent) for managing the physical chassis of its modular remote-access and WAN routing platforms. It exposes hardware inventory data such as slot occupancy, installed card/module types, and chassis-level identification. The MIB is squarely a hardware-status module: it lets an administrator confirm which cards are physically present and their operational state, which is essential for detecting a failed or removed line card, power module, or shelf component. It has no apparent dependency beyond the standard SMI/SNMPv2 conventions and Ascend's private enterprise OID branch. It would typically be deployed in NOC monitoring of Ascend MAX/Pipeline or TNT access concentrators used for dial-up or early broadband aggregation. Engineers can download the ASCEND-CHASSIS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ASCEND-CHASSIS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ascend MAX/Pipeline/TNT remote-access concentrators
  • Ascend modular WAN chassis

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll the chassis slot table to enumerate installed cards and their status, watching for a slot transitioning from an occupied/operational state to an empty or failed state, which would indicate a card has been pulled or has crashed. Because no sample objects were provided for this module, the exact table and object names cannot be confirmed from source, but the general pattern follows other Ascend chassis MIBs with per-slot card-type and card-status columns.

What Can Be Monitored

  • slot occupancy
  • installed card type
  • card operational status
  • chassis identification
