What Is ARISTA-GENERAL-MIB?

ARISTA-GENERAL-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from Arista Networks (EOS) providing general, device-wide system information not tied to any single subsystem, most notably a history of reload/reboot causes. It exposes a reload-cause table recording why and when the switch (or a specific unit in a multi-chassis system) last restarted, along with general notification, object, and conformance groupings for broader system status. Its monitoring emphasis is software/hardware status at the whole-device level: aristaReloadCauseDescription and aristaReloadTime let an operator determine whether a switch rebooted due to a software crash, a manual reload, a power event, or a watchdog trigger — critical for distinguishing planned maintenance from an unexpected outage. As a young, evolving module (noted as a "first draft"), it is expected to depend on and complement Arista's broader system/entity MIBs over time. It is deployed on Arista EOS switches, particularly in environments wanting automated root-cause tracking of device restarts across a fleet. Engineers can download the ARISTA-GENERAL-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ARISTA-GENERAL-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

What Can Be Monitored

  • last reload/reboot cause
  • reload timestamp
  • per-unit reload history (for multi-unit systems)

Supported Devices

  • Arista Networks EOS switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll aristaReloadCauseTable keyed by aristaReloadUnitIndex and aristaReloadIndex to retrieve aristaReloadCauseDescription and aristaReloadTime for the most recent restart of each unit in a modular or clustered Arista system. A cause description indicating a kernel panic or unexpected power loss, correlated with aristaReloadTime, would trigger escalation as an unplanned outage rather than routine maintenance. Fleet-wide polling of this table across many switches helps identify a batch of devices affected by the same underlying hardware or software issue.
