What Is ARISTA-NEXTHOP-GROUP-MIB?
ARISTA-NEXTHOP-GROUP-MIB is an Arista Networks vendor MIB for EOS-based switches/routers, covering next-hop group (NHG) configuration used for ECMP (Equal Cost Multipath) and policy-based forwarding. It exposes the configured next-hop groups, their names and types, along with per-entry packet and byte counters that track traffic forwarded through each next-hop within a group. Administrators use it to monitor software/forwarding-plane status — checking that traffic is being load-balanced as expected across ECMP paths or policy-routed next-hops, and detecting an imbalanced or zero-traffic next-hop that would indicate a failed or misconfigured path. The module is self-contained around Arista's own object tree but conceptually complements standard routing MIBs (e.g., IP-MIB, IP-FORWARD-MIB) for full routing visibility, though no explicit standard dependency is stated. It is typically deployed in data center or service-provider networks running Arista EOS switches that use ECMP or manual next-hop-group forwarding policies. Engineers can download the ARISTA-NEXTHOP-GROUP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ARISTA-NEXTHOP-GROUP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Arista Networks EOS switch/router
Monitoring Examples
An operator would poll aristaNexthopGroupTable (via aristaNexthopGroupEntry) to see each group's aristaNexthopGroupName and aristaNexthopGroupType, then check aristaNexthopGroupCounterTable entries for aristaNexthopGroupCounterPacketCount and aristaNexthopGroupCounterByteCount per next-hop, indexed by aristaNexthopGroupEntryIndex and aristaNexthopGroupCounterIndex. A next-hop showing zero or stalled packet/byte counts while its siblings in the same group carry traffic would reveal that ECMP path has silently failed or been withdrawn from forwarding. These objects are drawn directly from the sample objects provided for this MIB.
What Can Be Monitored
- next-hop group configuration
- next-hop group type
- per-next-hop packet count
- per-next-hop byte count
- ECMP path traffic distribution

RFC description
Defines management objects for Arista NextHop Groups (NHG), which allow manual creation of nexthop lists for routing decisions with tunnel support (such as GRE) for packet forwarding in hardware.
