Description: Arista EOS external alarm input port status and threshold notification management.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is ARISTA-EXTERNAL-ALARM-MIB?
ARISTA-EXTERNAL-ALARM-MIB is a proprietary Arista Networks module for reporting the state of physical external alarm input contacts wired into an Arista switch, commonly used for environmental sensors like door contacts, smoke detectors, or third-party equipment alarms. It exposes a table of alarm inputs with their asserted/deasserted state, assertion counts, timestamps of the last assertion and deassertion, configured polarity, and the action taken when triggered. This is explicitly a hardware fault/environmental monitoring module, letting operators detect facility-level alarm conditions (e.g., an open cabinet door or triggered smoke alarm) that are wired into the switch's alarm contacts. It is a self-contained EOS-specific hardware extension without dependency on standard IETF MIBs, since external alarm contacts are a platform-specific hardware feature. It is deployed on Arista switches equipped with external alarm input ports in data centers or telecom facilities needing environmental/facility alarm integration. Engineers can download the ARISTA-EXTERNAL-ALARM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ARISTA-EXTERNAL-ALARM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Arista Networks EOS switch with external alarm input ports
Monitoring Examples
An operator would poll aristaExternalAlarmTable, indexed by aristaExternalAlarmId, checking aristaExternalAlarmAsserted for current trigger state and aristaExternalAlarmCount for how many times it has fired. The aristaExternalAlarmLastAsserted and aristaExternalAlarmLastDeasserted timestamps, combined with aristaExternalAlarmDescription and aristaExternalAlarmPolarity, help identify exactly which physical contact triggered and when. A transition of aristaExternalAlarmAsserted to true accompanied by an incrementing aristaExternalAlarmCount would indicate a facility condition such as an open door or triggered smoke sensor requiring immediate attention.
What Can Be Monitored
- external alarm assertion state
- alarm trigger count
- last assertion/deassertion timestamps
- alarm input polarity configuration
- configured alarm action
