Category: Device Management
Description: AOL network equipment management for internal network infrastructure monitoring.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is AOLAN-MIB?
AOLAN-MIB corresponds to Intel's Alert on LAN technology, part of Intel's client/server manageability initiative (reflected in the tCO-products and management-products OID branches in its object tree), and is not related to the America Online company despite its name. It exposes basic system-identification objects such as system name (NetBIOS name), system GUID, and IP address, along with generic event objects (eventString, eventInfo) used to report hardware alert conditions. This MIB is fundamentally about hardware-fault alerting: Alert on LAN is designed to let a network interface or motherboard controller report hardware-level alarm conditions, such as chassis intrusion or thermal events, over the network even when the host operating system is down or unresponsive, making it a hardware-status-alerting MIB rather than a performance-counter one. It sits within Intel's proprietary desktop/server manageability architecture, a conceptual precursor to later technologies like IPMI and Intel AMT. It is deployed across enterprise desktop and server fleets using Intel network adapters or motherboards that support Alert on LAN for out-of-band hardware alerting to a central management console. Engineers can download the AOLAN-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in AOLAN-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Intel-based PC/server with Alert on LAN-capable network adapter or motherboard
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll systemName and systemGUID to identify which client machine sent an alert, then inspect eventString and eventInfo to determine the nature of the reported hardware event, such as a chassis-open or thermal condition, delivered via Alert on LAN even when the machine's OS-level SNMP agent is unavailable. The iPAddress object confirms the network location of the alerting device for the management console. Because alerts can be generated independent of the OS, this provides visibility into hardware faults that would otherwise go unreported during a system crash or power event.
What Can Be Monitored
- hardware alert event string/info
- system name (NetBIOS)
- system GUID
- reporting device IP address
