This OID tracks whether an Alarm Indication Signal is being received on this virtual path link due to a detected fault condition in the receive direction. Network engineers monitor this to detect upstream network problems and trigger rapid failover to standby circuits. For example, an AIS status of "inactive" means the link is healthy, while "active" means a fault has been detected upstream.
