This read-only integer is the Virtual Path Identifier (outer label) on the output ATM interface for this Virtual Channel connection. It groups VCs into logical paths for multiplexing efficiency and network organization. For example, if the VPI is '2' on the output interface, multiple VCs might share VPI 2 but with different VCI numbers, allowing the switch to process them as a group.
