Category: Switch Management

Description: Manages configuration backup and restore operations on 3Com network devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is A3COM0469-BACKUP-AND-RESTORE?

A3COM0469-BACKUP-AND-RESTORE is a 3Com vendor-specific MIB implementing the Simple Configuration Backup and Restore feature for stacks of 3Com switches, allowing configuration to be saved to and restored from a TFTP server. Its central control object, a3ComBackupAction, drives the operation (cliSave/cliVerify, binarySave/binaryVerify, restoreConfig, restoreIgnoringErrors, loadDescriptionOnly, or takeSnapshot), while a3ComBackupTftpServer and a3ComBackupFilename supply the target, a3ComBackupStatus reports the outcome via a large BackupStatus enumeration (over two dozen values covering TFTP errors, checksum/hardware mismatches, and success/abort states), and a3ComBackupBytes tracks transfer progress; a3ComBackupNecessary and a3ComBackupResetNecessary flag when a stored backup no longer matches the current hardware configuration. A simple locking model makes most objects read-only while a3ComBackupAction is not notActive, preventing one administrator's backup/restore job from being corrupted by another user's concurrent writes. A3ComBackupStatus returning backupWrongHardwareType or backupCommandFailed after a scheduled restore would indicate the stored backup no longer matches the device it's being applied to, and the A3COM0469-BACKUP-AND-RESTORE MIB is deployed on 3Com switch stacks running this backup/restore feature.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in A3COM0469-BACKUP-AND-RESTORE. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • 3Com switch stacks supporting the Simple Configuration Backup and Restore feature

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls a3ComBackupStatus after a scheduled cliSave operation completes; a status of backupTftpDiskFull instead of backupOperationSucceeded would indicate the TFTP server ran out of space and the configuration backup was not actually written.

What Can Be Monitored

  • backup/restore operation status and progress
  • TFTP server/filename configuration
  • hardware-configuration-change flags (backup necessary/reset necessary)
  • last failed command and failure reason
  • last action performed
