Description: Manages ZyXEL storm control thresholds for limiting broadcast, multicast, and unknown unicast traffic rates.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is ZYXEL-STORM-CONTROL-MIB?
ZYXEL-STORM-CONTROL-MIB is a ZyXEL enterprise MIB covering the subtree for storm control, a switch feature limiting the rate of broadcast, multicast, and unknown-unicast traffic on each port to prevent a traffic storm (often from a loop or misbehaving device) from overwhelming the network. It exposes configuration for per-port, per-traffic-type rate thresholds and the action taken when a threshold is exceeded (drop or shutdown). This provides fault/performance monitoring value: administrators can identify which ports exceeded their configured storm thresholds, a strong signal of a network loop, broadcast storm, or misbehaving/compromised device on that segment, often correlating with the port being placed into errdisable. It shares port-indexing conventions with IF-MIB and interacts with the ZyXEL errdisable MIB, since storm-control violations are a common errdisable trigger. It is deployed on ZyXEL access switches in any environment where uncontrolled broadcast/multicast traffic could degrade performance, such as large flat Layer 2 networks with many end-user devices. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the ZYXEL-STORM-CONTROL-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ZYXEL-STORM-CONTROL-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- ZyXEL managed access switch
Monitoring Examples
No sample objects were provided, but this MIB would typically expose a per-port storm-control configuration and status table with fields for broadcast/multicast/unknown-unicast rate thresholds and a violation/exceeded flag. An administrator would poll the violation flag to detect a port currently exceeding its storm threshold, which combined with a spike in broadcast traffic would indicate a Layer 2 loop or a malfunctioning NIC flooding the segment.
What Can Be Monitored
- per-port storm-control thresholds (broadcast/multicast/unknown-unicast)
- storm threshold violation status
- storm control action taken (drop/shutdown)
