Category: ZyXEL System and Hardware Management

Description: Provides ZyXEL cable diagnostic management using TDR to detect and locate cable faults on Ethernet ports.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ZYXEL-CABLE-DIAGNOSTIC-MIB?

ZYXEL-CABLE-DIAGNOSTIC-MIB provides Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR)-based cable diagnostic management for ZyXEL managed switches, allowing an administrator to test the physical Ethernet cabling attached to a switch port. It exposes control objects to trigger a cable test on a given port and result objects reporting the test outcome, including cable status such as normal, open, or short, and the estimated distance to the fault. This is a hardware-fault diagnostic capability: it directly supports monitoring physical-layer hardware health by identifying a broken, shorted, or miswired cable before it causes a link outage, complementing standard interface up/down status. It builds on IEEE Ethernet physical-layer concepts and is typically used alongside the standard IF-MIB for a complete picture of port health. It is deployed on ZyXEL managed switches in enterprise wiring closets, where ZYXEL-CABLE-DIAGNOSTIC-MIB SNMP monitoring supports TDR-based cable-plant troubleshooting.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ZYXEL-CABLE-DIAGNOSTIC-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • ZyXEL managed switches

Monitoring Examples

No object names were captured in sample_objects, but consistent with its stated purpose the module would expose a per-port cable-test control object and a results table reporting cable pair status and fault distance. An administrator troubleshooting an intermittently flapping port would trigger a TDR test and read the fault-distance result to locate a cable break rather than replacing the wrong cable segment.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-port cable test status
  • cable pair fault type (open/short/normal)
  • estimated fault distance
  • cable test trigger/completion state
