Category: ZyXEL System and Hardware Management

Description: Monitors ZyXEL SFP and SFP+ transceiver module diagnostics including temperature, power, and bias current.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is ZYXEL-TRANSCEIVER-MIB?

ZYXEL-TRANSCEIVER-MIB is a ZyXEL Communications vendor-specific MIB (under the ZYXEL-ES-SMI esMgmt subtree) that exposes per-port pluggable transceiver (SFP/SFP+) identification and Digital Diagnostic Monitoring Interface (DDMI) data on ZyXEL Ethernet switches. Its zyxelTransceiverSerialTable, indexed by dot1dBasePort, reports module type, vendor name, part number, serial number, revision, and date code for the installed transceiver, while zyxelTransceiverDdmiTable (indexed by port and DDMI type) reports current value, high/low alarm thresholds, and high/low warning thresholds for temperature, supply voltage, TX bias current, and TX/RX optical power, all scaled to 0.01 units. Ten NOTIFICATION-TYPE definitions pair with ifIndex to report each DDMI parameter going out of range and later recovering (for example zyTransceiverDdmiTemperatureOutOfRange and its Recovered counterpart), giving a manager an event-driven view of optical-transceiver health in addition to polling. This complements the standard IF-MIB and BRIDGE-MIB by adding vendor-specific physical-layer optics diagnostics, and it is deployed on ZyXEL switches with pluggable SFP/SFP+ uplinks. Engineers rely on the ZYXEL-TRANSCEIVER-MIB MIB to catch a degrading optic before it causes a link outage.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ZYXEL-TRANSCEIVER-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • ZyXEL Ethernet switches with SFP/SFP+ transceiver slots

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls zyxelTransceiverDdmiTable for zyTransceiverDdmiCurrent against zyTransceiverDdmiAlarmMax/Min on a given dot1dBasePort, and a zyTransceiverDdmiTxPowerOutOfRange trap without a subsequent Recovered trap would indicate a transceiver's transmit power has drifted outside its safe operating range.

What Can Be Monitored

  • transceiver serial/vendor/part identification
  • DDMI temperature, voltage, TX bias, and optical power readings
  • DDMI alarm and warning thresholds
  • out-of-range and recovered notifications per parameter

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using zyTransceiverSerialModuleType OID:

Select a ZyXEL Ethernet switches with SFP/SFP+ transceiver slot (DDMI optical-power/temperature/voltage threshold status) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type zyTransceiverSerialModuleType into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports the transceiver module type. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value is 'nonoperational', or it changes unexpectedly, since the transceiver type should stay constant for a given physical module and a change often means it was swapped or is failing. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
