Category: Xylan OmniSwitch

Description: Manages Xylan OmniSwitch NTP server configuration, synchronization status, and stratum information.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is XYLAN-NTP-MIB?

This is a Xylan Corporation enterprise MIB for the OmniSwitch ATM/LAN switch line, focused on the switch's built-in Network Time Protocol (NTP) client/server subsystem. It exposes configuration and status data for NTP peers, including peer addresses, association type, authentication settings, protocol version, polling intervals, and administrative state. Though primarily a configuration MIB, it supports monitoring software health of the time-synchronization service — whether NTP is enabled, whether peer monitoring is active, and whether individual configured peers are administratively up — which matters because time drift can corrupt logging, certificate validation, and event correlation across the switch. It reflects the general NTP protocol concepts (RFC 1305/5905) but implements them as Xylan-proprietary objects rather than a formal IETF NTP MIB. It is deployed on OmniSwitch devices in enterprise or carrier networks where accurate, synchronized timestamps are required for troubleshooting and security auditing. Engineers can download the XYLAN-NTP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in XYLAN-NTP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Xylan OmniSwitch ATM/LAN switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll xylanNtpEnable and xylanNtpMonitorEnable to confirm the NTP client and its monitoring feature are turned on, then walk xylanNtpPeerTable to inspect each xylanNtpPeerEntry for xylanNtpPeerAddress, xylanNtpPeerType, xylanNtpPeerAdmin, and xylanNtpPeerPrefer. A peer showing xylanNtpPeerAdmin as down, or xylanNtpPeerAuth misconfigured, would reveal why the switch has stopped synchronizing with its preferred time source. Checking xylanNtpPeerMinpoll and xylanNtpPeerVersion helps confirm polling cadence and protocol compatibility with the upstream NTP server.

What Can Be Monitored

  • NTP client enable status
  • NTP peer monitoring status
  • configured NTP peer addresses
  • peer authentication settings
  • peer administrative state
  • peer polling interval
