Category: Wellfleet BayNetworks Routing Protocols

Description: Monitors Wellfleet RARP server parameters and reverse address resolution request statistics.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Wellfleet-RARP-MIB?

This is a vendor-specific proprietary MIB from Wellfleet Communications (later Bay Networks/Nortel) monitoring the router's RARP (Reverse Address Resolution Protocol) server function, which historically allowed diskless devices to obtain an IP address from their MAC address at boot time. It exposes RARP server configuration parameters and statistics on reverse address resolution requests handled by the router. It supports software status monitoring because a rising count of unanswered RARP requests, or the server showing a disabled state, would explain why diskless clients on that segment are failing to boot or obtain network addresses. RARP itself is defined by RFC 903, but no widely adopted standard RARP MIB exists, so this module is a Wellfleet-proprietary management extension without a direct standards MIB dependency. It is typically deployed on legacy Wellfleet/Bay Networks routers supporting older diskless workstations or network-booting devices. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the Wellfleet-RARP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Wellfleet-RARP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Wellfleet/Bay Networks routers acting as RARP servers for legacy diskless devices

Monitoring Examples

No sample_objects were provided for this module; based on the short_desc, an operator would poll the RARP server enable/status object and the request/response counters. A climbing count of RARP requests with no corresponding increase in successful responses would indicate the RARP server's address mapping table is missing entries for booting clients, preventing them from obtaining an IP address.

What Can Be Monitored

  • RARP server enable/status
  • RARP request count
  • RARP response/success count
