Category: Wellfleet BayNetworks System Management

Description: Monitors Wellfleet network packet statistics including forwarding rates and protocol distribution counters.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Wellfleet-NPK-MIB?

This is a vendor-specific proprietary MIB from Wellfleet Communications (later Bay Networks/Nortel) exposing internal network packet-processing statistics for its router platforms, including forwarding rates and protocol-distribution counters. It provides visibility into how the router's forwarding engine is handling traffic across different protocols at a given moment. It supports hardware/software status monitoring because a drop in overall forwarding rate, or a skewed protocol distribution, can indicate CPU/forwarding-engine overload, a misbehaving protocol generating excessive traffic, or a hardware forwarding fault. There is no documented dependency on other MIBs; it appears to be an internal Wellfleet-proprietary statistics module without a direct standards equivalent. It is typically deployed on Wellfleet/Bay Networks routers where operators need low-level visibility into packet forwarding performance and protocol mix for capacity planning or troubleshooting. Engineers can download the Wellfleet-NPK-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Wellfleet-NPK-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Wellfleet/Bay Networks multiprotocol routers

Monitoring Examples

No sample_objects were provided for this module; based on the short_desc, an operator would poll the aggregate packet forwarding rate counter and the per-protocol distribution counters over time. A sudden drop in forwarding rate combined with a spike in one protocol's counter (e.g., broadcast or a specific routing protocol) would suggest a traffic storm or forwarding-engine bottleneck degrading overall router performance.

What Can Be Monitored

  • packet forwarding rate
  • protocol distribution counters
  • dropped packet count
