Description: Manages Wellfleet packet capture parameters, filter expressions, and capture buffer statistics.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is Wellfleet-PCAP-MIB?
Wellfleet-PCAP-MIB is a vendor-proprietary MIB from Wellfleet Communications (a multiprotocol router vendor later absorbed into Bay Networks/Nortel) that manages the router's built-in packet-capture (PCAP) diagnostic feature. It exposes configuration data such as capture filter expressions and operational data reporting the state and contents of the onboard capture buffer. Its main monitoring value is tracking the software/diagnostic-feature status of the router: whether a capture session is currently running, how full the capture buffer has become, and how many packets have been captured or dropped, rather than reporting classic hardware faults. It is a vendor extension layered on top of the router's base SNMP agent and standard MIB-II, with no other MIB dependency implied. It is typically used in legacy Wellfleet/Bay Networks router deployments when a technician needs to remotely inspect an active packet trace during network troubleshooting. Engineers can download the Wellfleet-PCAP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Wellfleet-PCAP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Wellfleet/Bay Networks multiprotocol router
Monitoring Examples
No object or table names were supplied for this module, so specific identifiers cannot be cited; in general an operator would poll the capture-control status object to confirm a filter is active and installed correctly, then check the buffer fill level and captured/dropped packet counters to see whether a filter isn't matching expected traffic or the buffer has filled and begun dropping packets.
What Can Be Monitored
- packet capture session status
- active capture filter state
- capture buffer fill level
- captured packet count
- dropped packet count
