Category: VPN and Tunneling

Description: Covers GRE tunnel interfaces on Wellfleet equipment, including parameters, encapsulation settings, and traffic counters for tunneled data.

What Is Wellfleet-GRE-MIB?

The Wellfleet-GRE-MIB is a Wellfleet Communications proprietary MIB for managing Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) tunnel interfaces on Wellfleet routers, a software feature area for building virtual point-to-point links across an IP backbone. It exposes tunnel configuration objects (source/destination endpoints, encapsulation settings) and counters tracking packets and bytes sent/received through each tunnel. Its monitoring role is centered on software/service status: it lets an operator confirm a configured tunnel is operationally up and actively passing traffic, and detect a silently failed tunnel by watching for stalled traffic counters despite the tunnel showing configured. There is an implicit dependency on the standard MIB-II ifTable, since each GRE tunnel is typically also represented as a logical interface. It was deployed on Wellfleet/Bay Networks routers used to build overlay or backup links between sites in enterprise WAN topologies. Engineers can download the Wellfleet-GRE-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Wellfleet-GRE-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Wellfleet router
  • Bay Networks/Nortel router with GRE tunneling

Monitoring Examples

An administrator checks the tunnel configuration table to confirm the local and remote tunnel endpoint addresses match the intended topology, then polls the associated traffic counters for packets and bytes traversing the tunnel. If the counters stop incrementing while the underlying physical interface and routing table still show the path as reachable, that signals the GRE tunnel itself has silently failed even though the network layer beneath it looks healthy.

What Can Be Monitored

  • GRE tunnel endpoint configuration
  • tunnel operational state
  • tunneled packet/byte counters
  • encapsulation settings
