What Is Wellfleet-CES-MIB?

This is a vendor-specific proprietary MIB from Wellfleet Communications (later Bay Networks/Nortel) managing Circuit Emulation Service (CES), which carries TDM (time-division multiplexed) voice/data circuits over an ATM backbone. It exposes per-circuit configuration objects tying a CBR (constant bit rate) service instance to a specific ATM virtual circuit (VPI/VCI), along with administrative enable/disable and delete controls. It supports hardware/software status monitoring because the state of each CES circuit's ATM VPI/VCI binding and its disable flag directly indicate whether a TDM tributary is actively emulated over the ATM fabric or has been shut down due to an underlying failure. It builds on ATM-layer addressing concepts (VPI/VCI) similar to standard ATM-MIB conventions, though implemented as a Wellfleet-proprietary CES extension. It is typically deployed on Wellfleet/Bay Networks ATM edge routers used to backhaul legacy TDM voice or leased-line traffic over an ATM core network. Engineers can download the Wellfleet-CES-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Wellfleet-CES-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Wellfleet/Bay Networks ATM routers supporting Circuit Emulation Service

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls wfAtmCESConfTable/wfAtmCESConfEntry (indexed by wfAtmCESConfAtmIndex and wfAtmCESConfCbrIndex) to see each CES circuit's assigned wfAtmCESConfAtmVpi/wfAtmCESConfAtmVci and its wfAtmCESConfCbrService class. Checking wfAtmCESConfDisable across entries reveals which TDM circuits have been administratively shut down, often in response to a failing ATM VC, while wfAtmCESConfVclCct shows the underlying virtual-circuit-to-circuit mapping used for emulation. A circuit unexpectedly showing wfAtmCESConfDisable set would explain a voice or leased-line outage even when the physical ATM link itself is healthy.

What Can Be Monitored

  • CES circuit ATM VPI/VCI assignment
  • CBR service class
  • circuit enable/disable state
  • virtual-circuit-to-circuit (VCL) mapping
