Description: Manages World Wide Packets syslog message logging severity levels, facility codes, and output destinations.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is WWP-SYSLOG-MIB?
This is a vendor-specific proprietary MIB from World Wide Packets (WWP), a maker of carrier Ethernet access and aggregation switches later acquired by Ciena. It exposes configuration objects for the device's syslog subsystem, covering severity-level thresholds, facility code assignments, and the destination hosts or ports to which log messages are forwarded. Although it is largely a configuration MIB rather than a live-counter MIB, it plays a direct role in software status monitoring because it controls whether and how the device reports operational events, errors, and state transitions that reflect hardware or software health. A misconfigured severity filter or destination setting can silently suppress visibility into interface, power, or process failures that would otherwise be logged and forwarded to a monitoring station. It has no strong documented dependency on other MIBs, though it parallels generic SNMP notification and syslog conventions used across vendors, and it is typically deployed on WWP Ethernet access/aggregation switches in metro and carrier networks where centralized log collection is required. Engineers can download the WWP-SYSLOG-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in WWP-SYSLOG-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- World Wide Packets Ethernet access/aggregation switches
Monitoring Examples
Sample_objects for this module were not provided, so specific object identifiers cannot be cited with confidence; the module_desc confirms it covers syslog severity, facility, and destination configuration. In practice an administrator would configure the severity threshold and destination host/port objects to control which fault or state-change messages are forwarded to a central syslog collector. If the severity threshold were set too high, critical interface-down or power-fault events would never be forwarded, delaying incident detection even though the device itself logged them locally.
What Can Be Monitored
- syslog severity threshold
- facility code assignment
- log destination host/port configuration
- message forwarding/logging status
