What Is WS-SMI?

WS-SMI is the Structure of Management Information module for Symbol Technologies' wireless switch product line (later Motorola/Zebra), defining the enterprise OID hierarchy under which all of Symbol's wireless-switch-specific MIBs are rooted. Like other SMI modules, it contains no operational objects of its own -- no counters, status flags, or configuration parameters -- but instead establishes naming conventions and OID branches (e.g., for licensing, DNS, mobility, and other subsystems) used by sibling MIBs such as WS-INFRA-LIC-MIB and WS-SW-DNS-MIB. Because it defines no runtime data, it plays no direct role in monitoring hardware or software status; that is left entirely to the product MIBs built on top of it. Its only dependency is on the standard SNMPv2-SMI/SNMPv2-CONF conventions for defining enterprise trees. Any WS-SMI reference is therefore implicit, invoked whenever a management system needs to interpret OIDs from Symbol/Zebra wireless switch products.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in WS-SMI. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

WS-SMI is a pure Structure-of-Management-Information module and defines no monitorable runtime objects, so there is no realistic polling scenario to describe. Its function is limited to declaring the enterprise OID tree that other Symbol wireless-switch MIBs (such as WS-INFRA-LIC-MIB and WS-SW-DNS-MIB) build their object definitions under.
