Description: Provides variables for identifying VMware system software by product name, version, build number, update, and patch level.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is VMWARE-SYSTEM-MIB?
VMWARE-SYSTEM-MIB is VMware's vendor-specific SNMP module for identifying the system software running on a VMware host or appliance. It is a compact, purely informational MIB exposing product name, version, build number, update level, and patch level rather than performance counters or environmental data. Its primary monitoring value is software status: it lets an administrator confirm exactly which VMware product, version, build, and patch a given host is running, which is essential for tracking patch compliance and diagnosing version-specific bugs across a fleet of hosts. It is a small, self-contained MIB (with its own conformance/compliance/group definitions) that does not appear to depend on other MIBs beyond standard SNMPv2 conformance conventions. It is typically deployed across VMware ESXi/vCenter environments where a monitoring system inventories software versions across many hosts to flag out-of-date or unpatched systems. Engineers can download the VMWARE-SYSTEM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in VMWARE-SYSTEM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- VMware ESXi host
- VMware virtualization appliance
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll vmwProdName and vmwProdVersion together to confirm a host is running the expected VMware product and major version, then check vmwProdBuild and vmwProdPatch to verify a specific security patch has been applied fleet-wide. A host reporting an older vmwProdUpdate or missing vmwProdPatch value compared to its peers would flag it as needing an update. The vmwSystemMIBConformance/vmwSystemMIBCompliances groups define which objects a compliant agent must implement, letting monitoring tools verify agent completeness.
