All MIBs › VMWARE-RESOURCES-MIB
Category: Hardware and Environment
Description: Provides instrumentation for ESXi hypervisor resource usage including CPU, memory, and disk utilization.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is VMWARE-RESOURCES-MIB?
VMWARE-RESOURCES-MIB provides instrumentation for VMware ESXi hypervisor resource usage, covering CPU and memory allocation and consumption at both the host and per-virtual-machine level. It exposes per-VM CPU tables (utilization and share allocation) and per-VM/host memory tables, alongside host-level totals such as physical CPU count. It is directly focused on hardware/software resource-load monitoring: it lets an admin see CPU utilization and shares per VM to catch a VM starving others of CPU, and memory usage per VM alongside console-OS and available host memory to catch memory pressure or overcommitment. It is a self-contained VMware vendor MIB rather than one built on an IETF host-resources standard, though it is often deployed alongside standard host MIBs for fuller ESXi visibility. It is deployed by virtualization administrators monitoring ESXi hosts and their resident VMs for capacity planning and contention troubleshooting. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the VMWARE-RESOURCES-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in VMWARE-RESOURCES-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- VMware ESXi hypervisor host
Monitoring Examples
Polling cpuTable (cpuEntry indexed by cpuVMID) with cpuUtil and cpuShares lets an admin see per-VM CPU utilization and share allocation to spot a VM starving others for CPU time. numCPUs reports the physical CPU count on the host for capacity baselining. memTable (memEntry, memVMID) alongside memSize, memCOS (console OS memory), and memAvail exposes per-VM and host memory consumption, revealing memory pressure or overcommitment on the ESXi host.
What Can Be Monitored
- per-VM CPU utilization
- CPU share allocation
- physical CPU count
- per-VM memory usage
- console OS memory usage
- available host memory
