Category: VMware Virtualization

Description: Monitors VMware CIM object manager service status and provider health on ESX hosts.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is VMWARE-CIMOM-MIB?

VMWARE-CIMOM-MIB is a VMware vendor MIB providing SNMP instrumentation of the CIM Object Manager (CIMOM) service running on ESX/ESXi hypervisor hosts. It is largely a notifications/conformance-oriented module exposing the health and status of the CIM broker process that mediates hardware/software management data on the host. Its monitoring relevance is software service-status oriented — confirming the CIMOM service itself is running and healthy, since a CIMOM failure would cut off hardware sensor visibility (temperature, power, fans) that ESX hosts normally expose through CIM providers. It builds on the DMTF CIM standard as its underlying data model, translated into SNMP notifications. It is typically deployed on VMware ESX/ESXi hypervisor hosts in virtualized data center environments, making VMWARE-CIMOM-MIB SNMP monitoring a useful check on CIM broker health.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in VMWARE-CIMOM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • VMware ESX/ESXi hypervisor hosts

Monitoring Examples

The provided sample objects are limited to notification/conformance/group definitions (vmwCimOmNotifications, vmwCimOmMIBConformance, vmwCimOmMIBCompliances, vmwCimOmMIBGroups), indicating this module is largely a notification and conformance framework rather than a rich set of pollable data objects; an NMS would subscribe to vmwCimOmNotifications to be alerted if the CIM Object Manager service on an ESX host stops responding, but no further runtime object detail is available here.

What Can Be Monitored
