What Is USR-SS7-MIB?

USR-SS7-MIB is a vendor-specific enterprise module from CommWorks (formerly US Robotics, later 3Com) that manages SS7 (Signaling System 7) telephony signaling on carrier gateway equipment, covering protocol selection, signaling link configuration, and call control. It exposes configuration objects for SS7 signaling link adaptation (SLAP) parameters such as gateway IP/port, heartbeat timers, chassis ID, and connection retry behavior, plus statistical counters for signaling bus (SBUS) packet transmission and reception success/failure. Its role in hardware/software status monitoring is significant: it lets an administrator confirm SS7 signaling connectivity is healthy by tracking heartbeat and connection retry counters, detect signaling link instability via rising SBUS transmit/receive failure counts, and verify the correct SS7 protocol and LAN start method are configured for the gateway. It is grounded in the ITU-T/ANSI SS7 protocol suite as its underlying signaling standard, implemented here as a CommWorks-proprietary management extension. It is typically deployed on CommWorks/3Com media/signaling gateways in carrier voice networks that interconnect IP and traditional SS7-based telephony infrastructure. Engineers can download the USR-SS7-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in USR-SS7-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • CommWorks/3Com SS7 signaling/media gateway

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll usrSS7SLAPgatewayIPAddress and usrSS7SLAPgatewayPort to confirm the signaling link adaptation peer is correctly configured, and watch usrSS7SLAPHeartbeatTimerNearEnd alongside usrSS7SLAPAllowedMissedHeartBeats to detect an at-risk signaling association before it drops. Monitoring usrSS7StatSBUSXmitPacketsFailCount and usrSS7StatSBUSRcvdPacketsOKCount trends would reveal a degrading signaling bus connection, an early warning of call setup failures. usrSS7SLAPNumberOfConnectionRetries climbing toward usrSS7SLAPConnectionRetryInterval limits would show a gateway struggling to establish or maintain SS7 connectivity.

What Can Be Monitored

  • SS7 protocol and LAN start method configuration
  • signaling link adaptation (SLAP) gateway address/port
  • heartbeat timers and missed heartbeat count
  • connection retry count and interval
  • signaling bus (SBUS) packet success/failure counters
