Category: Network Management and SNMP Infrastructure

Description: Manages UMS application object library entries for automated network operations and policy enforcement.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is UMSAOL-MIB?

UMSAOL-MIB is a vendor-specific SNMP module (iBMPSG naming suggests IBM/BMC Patrol-related monitoring software) that models a watchdog mechanism for tracking the health of monitored devices or entities within a Unified Management System's application object library. It exposes a watchdog table where each entry represents a monitored device or entity, its description, an expected timeout/heartbeat interval, and the action to take when that timeout expires. Its monitoring purpose is explicitly software/process health tracking: it lets an operator see which monitored entity last missed its expected check-in, when that expiration occurred, and what automated remediation action was configured, effectively acting as a meta-monitor for other managed elements' liveness. It appears to depend on an underlying UMS/iBMPSG management framework rather than any standard IETF MIB. It is typically deployed within IBM/BMC-style unified management platforms that use this watchdog construct to detect silent failures of monitored subsystems or devices. Engineers can download the UMSAOL-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in UMSAOL-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • IBM/BMC-style unified management system (UMS) host or managed application server

Monitoring Examples

An operator can walk iBMPSGWatchdogTable to see each iBMPSGWatchdogEntry keyed by iBMPSGWatchdogKeyIndex, showing iBMPSGWatchdogMonitoredDeviceId and iBMPSGWatchdogMonitoredEntity for what is being tracked. Checking iBMPSGWatchdogTimeOfLastExpiration against iBMPSGWatchdogTimeoutInterval reveals whether a monitored entity has missed its expected heartbeat, and iBMPSGWatchdogActionOnExpiration shows what automated response (e.g., alert, restart) was configured to fire. A monitored entity whose iBMPSGWatchdogMonitoredEntityOnLastExpiration keeps updating frequently indicates repeated timeout events, pointing to an unstable underlying process or device.

What Can Be Monitored

  • monitored entity/device identity
  • watchdog timeout interval
  • time of last expiration
  • configured action on expiration

RFC description

IBM PSG watchdog monitoring MIB for managing timeout intervals and device health checks on Alert-on-LAN systems.

Start monitoring IBM/BMC-style unified management system (UMS) host or managed application server (watchdog heartbeat/timeout status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
