Category: Flow Monitoring and Sampling, Transition Networks Media Converters

Description: Manages Transition Networks sFlow traffic sampling rate, collector, and datagram configuration.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is TN-S-FLOW-MIB?

This is a Transition Networks private MIB implementing sFlow traffic-sampling configuration on its Ethernet switches, letting the device export sampled packet-flow data to one or more external sFlow collectors for network traffic analysis. It exposes receiver-configuration data (collector address, UDP port, datagram size, timeout) and per-port sampler-enable settings that control which interfaces have flow sampling active. Its monitoring value is software/configuration status rather than direct hardware health: confirming a collector address and port are correctly reachable, verifying the sampling timeout hasn't expired (which would silently stop export), and checking which ports have tnSFlowSamplerEnabled set, all of which explain a sudden loss of flow-analytics visibility for a given switch. It implements the industry-standard sFlow protocol (InMon sFlow v5) data model within Transition Networks' private OID tree. It's typically deployed in enterprise network traffic-visibility monitoring alongside an sFlow collector such as sFlowTrend or ntopng. Engineers can download the TN-S-FLOW-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TN-S-FLOW-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Transition Networks managed Ethernet switch

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll tnSFlowReceiverConfigTable, indexed by tnSFlowReceiverOwner, to check tnSFlowReceiverAddress, tnSFlowReceiverUDPPort, and tnSFlowReceiverTimeout to confirm the switch is still configured to export samples to the correct collector before the timeout lapses. tnSFlowReceiverMaxDatagramSize helps diagnose truncated or dropped export packets if set too small for the network path MTU. Checking tnSFlowPortConfigTable's tnSFlowSamplerEnabled per port reveals whether flow sampling was disabled on a specific interface, explaining a gap in that port's traffic visibility.

What Can Be Monitored

  • sFlow collector address/port
  • receiver timeout
  • max datagram size
  • per-port sampler enable state
  • receiver owner/release
