Category: Access Control and Authentication, Link Layer and Ethernet Protocols, Transition Networks Media Converters

Description: Manages Transition Networks UDLD unidirectional link detection configuration and port state.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is TN-UDLD-MIB?

TN-UDLD-MIB is a private (enterprise) SNMP module from Transition Networks that manages Unidirectional Link Detection (UDLD), a Layer 2 protocol used to detect one-way (unidirectional) links on Ethernet ports before they cause forwarding loops. It exposes two general categories of data: per-interface UDLD configuration parameters (mode and probe message interval) and per-interface UDLD operational status (link state and detected neighbor device identity). In a monitoring context it is primarily used to check the software/protocol status of switch ports rather than raw hardware health -- specifically the reported link state (bidirectional, unidirectional, indeterminate) and whether a configured neighbor is still being heard from, which flags cabling or fiber transceiver faults. It builds on standard interface indexing conventions (ifIndex from IF-MIB) to tie UDLD state back to physical/logical interfaces. It is typically deployed on Transition Networks managed Ethernet switches or media converters where fiber-optic links are common and unidirectional failures (e.g., a broken transmit or receive fiber strand) are a real operational risk. Engineers can download the TN-UDLD-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TN-UDLD-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Transition Networks managed Ethernet switch
  • Transition Networks media converter

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll tnUdldStatusInterfaceTable (tnUdldStatusInterfaceIfIndex, tnUdldStatusInterfaceLinkState) to confirm each UDLD-enabled port reports a bidirectional link state; a port stuck at 'unidirectional' or 'indeterminate' indicates a one-way fiber fault that standard link-up/link-down monitoring would miss. Cross-referencing tnUdldStatusInterfaceDeviceID and tnUdldStatusInterfaceDeviceName against the neighbor table helps verify the expected peer switch is still being detected. On the configuration side, tnUdldConfigInterfaceParamUdldMode and tnUdldConfigInterfaceParamProbeMsgInterval let an operator confirm UDLD is enabled and probing at the expected interval on critical uplinks.

What Can Be Monitored

  • UDLD link state per port
  • neighbor device ID and name
  • UDLD operating mode per interface
  • probe message interval
  • unidirectional link faults
