Category: Switch and Bridge Management, Transition Networks Media Converters
Description: Manages Transition Networks MAC address table entries, aging, and port filtering.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is TN-MAC-MIB?
TN-MAC-MIB is a Transition Networks proprietary module for managing MAC address table behavior on their Ethernet switches. It exposes configuration and state data covering automatic MAC address aging (enable/disable and aging time), per-port learning enablement, and static MAC address entries bound to VLANs and port members. Its monitoring value is largely software/configuration-status oriented: administrators can verify that dynamic MAC learning is functioning as expected on each port and that manually pinned static MAC entries remain correctly applied, which is important for troubleshooting forwarding problems or detecting unauthorized topology changes. It complements the standard BRIDGE-MIB/Q-BRIDGE-MIB forwarding database objects with vendor-specific aging and static-entry controls. It is typically deployed on access and aggregation switches where predictable MAC learning behavior and fixed static bindings (e.g., for security appliances or critical servers) are required. Engineers can download the TN-MAC-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TN-MAC-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Transition Networks managed Ethernet switch
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll tnMacLearningTable and tnMacTablePortLearning to confirm learning is enabled on the correct ports, and check tnMacAgeAutomaticAgingTime to verify the configured aging interval matches network design expectations. Querying tnMacStaticConfigTable entries (tnStaticMacAddress, tnStaticMacVlanId, tnStaticMacPortMembers, tnStaticMacStatus) would reveal whether a static binding intended to pin a critical device's MAC to a specific port and VLAN is still active; a status showing 'inactive' or missing would indicate the binding was lost, possibly after a configuration reload.
What Can Be Monitored
- automatic MAC aging enable state and timer
- per-port MAC learning mode
- static MAC address entries
- static entry VLAN and port bindings
- static entry status
