Description: Manages Transition Networks Ethernet linear protection switching state and configuration.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is TN-ELPS-MIB?

TN-ELPS-MIB is a Transition Networks proprietary SNMP MIB for Ethernet Linear Protection Switching (ELPS, per ITU-T G.8031), a mechanism providing fast failover between a working and protection path on a point-to-point Ethernet link. It exposes per-instance configuration such as protection architecture, working/protection flow port IDs, associated MEP IDs used for signal-fail detection, APS signaling, and switch direction. It is used to monitor the hardware/software status of the protection mechanism itself: whether the link is configured and which of the working or protection path is currently active, revealing whether a protection switchover has occurred due to a link failure. It depends on the underlying CFM/MEP infrastructure (802.1ag) for signal-fail detection, since the working/protection signal-fail MEP IDs reference MEPs on each path. It is deployed on Transition Networks Carrier Ethernet switches providing resilient point-to-point services in metro/access networks. Engineers can download the TN-ELPS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TN-ELPS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Transition Networks Carrier Ethernet switch

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls tnElpsCfgTable/tnElpsCfgEntry keyed by tnElpsInstance to check tnElpsConfigured and tnElpsDirection, confirming the protection group is active and correctly configured for unidirectional or bidirectional switching. tnElpsWSfMepId and tnElpsPSfMepId are cross-referenced against CFM MEP state to see which path (working via tnElpsWFlowPortId or protection via tnElpsPFlowPortId) currently reports a signal-fail condition, explaining an unexpected traffic path change. tnElpsApsMepId identifies the MEP carrying APS protocol messages between the two ends of the protected link.

What Can Be Monitored

  • ELPS instance configuration/active state
  • working vs protection path in use
  • signal-fail MEP state per path
  • protection architecture and direction
