Category: Time and NTP

Description: Manages system time configuration, synchronization source, and current clock values.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is TIME-MIB?

TIME-MIB is a vendor-neutral, standards-oriented MIB module for managing a device's absolute time configuration, including its synchronization source and current clock value. It exposes objects covering the device's current time, its time source (e.g. manual, NTP, or another synchronization mechanism), and related configuration for keeping the local clock accurate. Its monitoring value is primarily around software/system status: confirming a device's clock is correctly synchronized is important because accurate timestamps underpin log correlation, certificate validity, scheduled jobs, and trap/event ordering across a network. It is a foundational, largely self-contained MIB with only light dependency on standard SNMP textual conventions, though it is conceptually related to protocols like NTP. It is typically deployed across any managed network equipment where verifying time synchronization accuracy is operationally important for troubleshooting and compliance. Engineers can download the TIME-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TIME-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • any SNMP-managed network device or host

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll the current time value and compare it against a trusted reference to detect clock drift, and check the configured synchronization source to confirm the device is actually pulling time from the intended NTP or time server rather than running on an unsynchronized local clock. A device reporting a stale or drifting time value despite a configured sync source would indicate a failed synchronization attempt worth investigating. No sample object names were available in the source excerpt, so object names are inferred from the module's stated purpose.

What Can Be Monitored

  • current device time
  • time synchronization source
  • clock drift/accuracy
  • time configuration/synchronization status
