Category: Vendor-Specific Device Management
Description: Manages TCA v1 device configuration, threshold settings, and operational state.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is TCAv1-MIB?
TCAv1-MIB is a Bellcore (Telcordia) standards-oriented MIB that defines a generic Threshold Crossing Alert (TCA) mechanism for telecom network elements, allowing any interface performance counter to be watched against a configured threshold. Its tcaTable lets an operator associate a target object (tcaObject/tcaObjectDesc) on a given interface with a threshold value, a sample type/interval, and a running count of threshold crossings, with tcaTrapEnabler controlling whether an SNMP trap fires on crossing. Its monitoring purpose is generic performance/fault threshold monitoring: it wraps around whatever performance counters an interface exposes and reports how many times, and when, a configured threshold was exceeded, functioning as a fault/alerting layer rather than exposing its own hardware sensors. It is explicitly designed to be layered on top of other interface/performance MIBs, referencing arbitrary performance counters by OID, rather than defining new raw counters itself. It is deployed in telecom transport network elements (e.g., SONET/SDH, DS1/DS3 equipment) needing standardized threshold-crossing alerting per Bellcore/Telcordia requirements. Engineers can download the TCAv1-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TCAv1-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB (Bellcore/Telcordia TCA)
- telecom transport network elements (SONET/SDH, DS1/DS3 equipment)
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would configure a tcaTable/tcaEntry indexed by tcaIfIndex and tcaIndex, setting tcaObject to point at a specific performance counter (such as an error-second counter on that interface) and tcaThreshold to the acceptable crossing limit. Polling tcaCounts and tcaTimeStamp reveals how many times and when that threshold was exceeded during the tcaSampleType interval, and if tcaTrapEnabler is set, an SNMP trap would fire automatically the moment the monitored counter crosses tcaThreshold, flagging a degrading transport link before it fails outright.
What Can Be Monitored
- threshold-crossing count per monitored object
- configured threshold value
- sample type/interval
- trap-on-crossing enablement
- last crossing timestamp
