Description: Manages Symmetricom output generator configuration, signal format, and output port state.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is SYMMOUTGEN?
SYMMOUTGEN is the Symmetricom Common MIB for managing output signal generation on Symmetricom timing products, controlling how output ports behave when the system clock is not in normal tracking mode. It exposes configuration for each output port's behavior mode (on, squelch, or AIS) along with the signal format generated, and reflects the underlying system clock state. Monitoring it is directly about hardware and firmware timing health: the module tracks the system clock through five defined states (warm-up, free-run, fast track, normal track, and holdover), so polling it reveals whether the unit has fully locked to its reference or has fallen back to holdover or free-run due to a lost reference, which would degrade downstream timing accuracy. It is described as a shared "common" module across the TP5K family of Symmetricom products, implying dependency on that shared clock-state model rather than on external IETF standards. It is deployed in precision timing distribution systems such as telecom synchronization hubs where output signal integrity during reference loss must be closely monitored. Engineers can download the SYMMOUTGEN file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SYMMOUTGEN. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Symmetricom TP5K-family timing/synchronization appliance
Monitoring Examples
An admin polls the system clock state object to see whether the unit is in normal track (locked) or has degraded to holdover or free-run after losing its external reference, since holdover accuracy degrades over time. The per-port output behavior configuration (on/squelch/AIS) is checked to confirm outputs are squelched or set to AIS as intended when the clock is not in normal tracking, preventing downstream equipment from silently consuming bad timing. An unexpected state such as "holdover" persisting for an extended period would flag a reference source or GPS antenna problem needing attention.
What Can Be Monitored
- system clock state (warm-up/free-run/fast-track/normal-track/holdover)
- output port behavior mode (on/squelch/AIS)
- output signal format
- per-port output status
