Category: Enterprise SMI and OID Registration, Timing and Synchronization
Description: Specifies the common enterprise SMI OID structure Symmetricom uses for managing timing devices.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is SYMM-COMMON-SMI?
SYMM-COMMON-SMI is Symmetricom's enterprise Structure of Management Information module, establishing the top-level OID namespace under which Symmetricom's precision timing product MIBs (GPS/NTP/PTP clocks, time servers, sync distribution units) register their objects. As a pure SMI/root module it does not itself define monitorable object instances, so it carries no direct data on hardware status, uptime, or performance counters. Instead, functional Symmetricom timing-device MIBs beneath this OID tree expose things like clock lock status, oscillator holdover state, GPS antenna/signal status, and alarm conditions. Every product-specific Symmetricom MIB module depends on SYMM-COMMON-SMI for its enterprise OID assignment, making it a foundational dependency rather than a standalone monitoring MIB. It is deployed wherever Symmetricom (now Microsemi/Microchip) timing and synchronization equipment is present, as the base import for that vendor's device MIBs, and anyone tracing the SYMM-COMMON-SMI OID assignment will find it defines only the enterprise root, not any of the timing-status leaves themselves.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SYMM-COMMON-SMI. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Symmetricom timing/synchronization products (namespace-only module, applies broadly across the vendor's line)
Monitoring Examples
SYMM-COMMON-SMI contains no sample runtime objects — it defines only the enterprise OID root under which other Symmetricom MIB modules register. Actual timing-device monitoring (clock status, oscillator holdover, alarms) is exposed by those product-specific MIBs, not by this common SMI module. There is no direct polling scenario for this module by itself.
