Category: Timing and Synchronization

Description: Manages Symmetricom GNSS receiver configuration, satellite tracking, and position/timing fix state.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SYMMGNSS?

SYMMGNSS is Symmetricom's (now Microchip/Microsemi) common enterprise MIB for managing GNSS/GPS satellite-timing receivers, which are used as precise frequency and time-of-day references in telecom and network-timing equipment. Per its own description it is organized into two main branches -- gnssStatus, covering a port status table, a tracked-satellite table, and the current GNSS position-fix mode, and gnssConfig, covering receiver configuration, a position-setting table, and a present-position table. Its monitoring emphasis is on the software/operational status of the timing receiver: whether the GNSS engine has acquired a valid position fix, how many satellites are currently tracked, and the state of the receiver's timing/position ports, all of which are critical health indicators for any downstream system relying on GNSS-derived time or frequency. Given that it is described as a "common" MIB, it is designed to be reused/imported by other Symmetricom timing-product MIBs rather than existing as a one-off module. It is deployed in Symmetricom GPS/GNSS-based timing and synchronization appliances used in telecom central offices, financial trading infrastructure, and other precision-timing network elements, where SYMMGNSS SNMP monitoring confirms the receiver maintains a valid satellite fix.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SYMMGNSS. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Symmetricom (Microchip/Microsemi) GNSS/GPS timing receivers and network timing appliances

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll the gnssStatus satellite table to check the number of satellites currently tracked and confirm the position-fix mode scalar shows a valid 3D fix rather than "no fix," which would indicate a problem with the antenna or GNSS receiver. The gnssStatus port status table would be checked to confirm the receiver's status/output ports are operating normally, while the gnssConfig present-position table lets an operator verify the receiver has settled on the expected geographic coordinates. A sustained "no fix" status combined with a dropping tracked-satellite count would point to an antenna cabling fault or GNSS jamming/interference issue.

What Can Be Monitored

  • GNSS position-fix mode
  • number of satellites tracked
  • receiver port status
  • current/present position
  • position configuration settings
