Description: SWITCHENVIRONG module

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SWITCHENVIRONG?

SWITCHENVIRONG is a vendor environmental-monitoring MIB module for "G series" managed Ethernet switches that exposes environment status information for the device. It defines objects covering power supply and fan health, chassis temperature, and system memory and CPU utilization thresholds, placing it squarely in the environment/performance-counter category. It is explicitly built for monitoring hardware status — power and fan operational state, temperature readings, and CPU load/memory usage against configurable thresholds — so operators can detect overheating, power failures, or resource exhaustion before they cause an outage. It appears to be a self-contained vendor module without heavy reliance on standard IETF MIBs, focusing purely on environmental and resource telemetry. It is typically deployed on managed Ethernet switch platforms where an NMS polls it periodically to raise alerts on fan/power faults or CPU/memory threshold breaches. Engineers can download the SWITCHENVIRONG file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SWITCHENVIRONG. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • ZTE Corp. G-series managed Ethernet switches

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll powerStatus and fanStatus to confirm redundant power supplies and fans are operating normally, and check temperature against a configured threshold value to catch overheating before it damages hardware. The cpuloadCheckOnOff, cpuloadCheckInterval, and cpuloadCheckThreshold objects let the monitoring system enable periodic CPU load sampling and alert when utilization crosses the threshold, while memCheckOnOff/memCheckInterval/memCheckThreshhold govern equivalent memory threshold alarms. A sustained cpu or memory value near its threshold, or a fanStatus/powerStatus transition to a fault state, signals a device at risk of failure or already degraded.

What Can Be Monitored

  • power supply status
  • fan status
  • chassis temperature
  • CPU load percentage
  • memory utilization
  • configurable alarm thresholds

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using value OID:

Select a ZTE Corp. G-series managed Ethernet switch (power/fan/temperature/CPU-memory threshold status) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type value into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, then select it and click OK. It reports the temperature value. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an Integer32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the reported value exceeds the level expected for healthy operation, since sustained high temperature often precedes thermal shutdown or hardware degradation. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
