Category: Server and Hardware Management

Description: Manages Sun hardware control operations including power management and hardware component state.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SUN-HW-CTRL-MIB?

SUN-HW-CTRL-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from Sun Microsystems (later Oracle) providing hardware control capabilities for Sun platform devices managed through Integrated Lights-Out Management (ILOM). It exposes power management data and controls, including power supply unit (PSU) inventory and a detailed power-management table covering configurable policies, budgets, and consumption thresholds. It is squarely a hardware status/control MIB: sunHwCtrlTotalPSU and sunHwCtrlReservedPSU track power supply redundancy, while sunHwCtrlPowerMgmtValue/sunHwCtrlPowerMgmtActualPower and related budget/threshold objects let an admin monitor real-time power draw against configured power budgets and policies, directly reflecting the server's power-subsystem health. It is tied to Sun's ILOM management framework, implying dependency on the broader Sun/Oracle ILOM MIB suite for full server management context. It is deployed in Sun/Oracle server hardware (SPARC and x86 platforms) managed via ILOM, typically in data centers with power-capping or power-budgeting requirements where SUN-HW-CTRL-MIB SNMP monitoring provides the needed power-subsystem visibility.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SUN-HW-CTRL-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Sun Microsystems/Oracle server hardware managed via ILOM

Monitoring Examples

An admin would poll sunHwCtrlTotalPSU versus sunHwCtrlReservedPSU to check power supply redundancy, and walk sunHwCtrlPowerMgmtTable/sunHwCtrlPowerMgmtEntry (keyed by sunHwCtrlPowerMgmtID) to read sunHwCtrlPowerMgmtActualPower against sunHwCtrlPowerMgmtPermittedPower and sunHwCtrlPowerMgmtAvailablePower for a given sunHwCtrlPowerMgmtName. If sunHwCtrlPowerMgmtActualPower approaches the values set in sunHwCtrlPowerMgmtConsumptionThresholds while sunHwCtrlPowerMgmtPolicy is set to a capping mode, that would indicate the server is nearing its configured power budget and may throttle performance.

What Can Be Monitored

  • PSU count and redundancy
  • actual vs. permitted/available power draw
  • power management policy
  • consumption threshold status
  • power budget settings
