Description: Defines objects for Diffie-Hellman key exchange within the SNMP User-based Security Model.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring SNMP-USM-DH-OBJECTS-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is SNMP-USM-DH-OBJECTS-MIB?

SNMP-USM-DH-OBJECTS-MIB is a vendor-neutral IETF standards MIB (RFC 2786) that extends the SNMPv3 User-based Security Model (USM) with Diffie-Hellman key exchange, enabling forward-secret key changes and a "kickstart" mechanism for bootstrapping secure access to an SNMP agent without pre-sharing keys. It exposes security-configuration objects: DH parameters, per-user DH key tables, key-change action objects for both authentication and privacy keys, and a kickstart table for initial key agreement. This MIB does not monitor hardware or software operational status at all; its entire purpose is managing the cryptographic security state of the SNMP management channel itself, such as whether a user's auth/privacy key has been freshly negotiated via DH rather than transmitted in the clear. It is tightly dependent on and layered directly on top of the standard SNMP-USER-BASED-SM-MIB (usmUserTable) defined in RFC 3414, which it extends rather than replaces. It's deployed wherever SNMPv3 agents need secure, forward-secret key provisioning, typically in security-conscious enterprise or carrier networks doing initial SNMPv3 user onboarding. Engineers can download the SNMP-USM-DH-OBJECTS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SNMP-USM-DH-OBJECTS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
  • any SNMPv3-capable network device or host

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would use usmDHKickstartTable/usmDHKickstartEntry, keyed by usmDHKickstartIndex, to exchange usmDHKickstartMyPublic and usmDHKickstartMgrPublic values and establish an initial secure session with a freshly deployed agent that has no pre-shared SNMPv3 credentials. Afterward, usmDHUserAuthKeyChange and usmDHUserPrivKeyChange (or the "Own" variants) would be invoked against usmDHUserKeyTable entries to rotate a user's authentication and privacy keys with forward secrecy, and failure of these operations would indicate a DH parameter mismatch (usmDHParameters) between manager and agent.

What Can Be Monitored

  • per-user DH key table entries
  • kickstart public value exchange status
  • authentication key change results
  • privacy key change results
