All MIBs › SNMP-TEST-MIB

Category: SNMP Infrastructure and Standards

Description: Provides SNMP protocol test objects for verifying agent implementation correctness and interoperability.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SNMP-TEST-MIB?

SNMP-TEST-MIB is a diagnostic/testing MIB (associated here with the 'rl' object prefix, consistent with RADLAN/Marvell-derived agent code commonly embedded in switch firmware) used purely to validate that an SNMP agent implementation behaves correctly, including handling of GET, GETNEXT, and SET operations. It exposes a version identifier and a dedicated 'sets test' table whose entries exist solely to be written to and read back, verifying SET-operation correctness rather than describing real hardware or software state. As such it is not used for monitoring hardware health, environment, or performance in production; its only 'status' value is confirming the agent's protocol conformance and interoperability. It has no functional dependency on other MIBs beyond the base SNMPv2-SMI/SNMPv2-TC conventions used to define its syntax. It is typically used by MIB compiler/agent developers and QA teams during firmware development or SNMP stack certification, not by end-user network operators. Engineers can download the SNMP-TEST-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SNMP-TEST-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • vendor-neutral, standards-based test MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer (commonly embedded in RADLAN/Marvell-based switch/router firmware for agent testing)

Monitoring Examples

A test harness would perform a GET on rlSnmpTestMibVersion to confirm the expected test MIB version is loaded on the agent, then issue a series of SET requests against rows in rlSetsTestTable/rlSetsTestEntry and immediately GET them back to verify the values persisted correctly. Any mismatch between the SET value and the subsequent GET result would indicate an agent bug in write-handling or row instance indexing. This pattern is repeated across data types to validate encoding/decoding correctness in the agent's SNMP stack.

What Can Be Monitored

  • SNMP test MIB version
  • SET-operation round-trip correctness
  • test table row read/write behavior
  • agent protocol conformance
