Description: MIB for Virtual Concatenation Group (VCG) interfaces on Smartoptics SiteLight optical transport devices, covering GFP-F, GFP-T, and POS framing

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SL-VCG-MIB?

SL-VCG-MIB is a vendor MIB from Smartoptics for Virtual Concatenation Group (VCG) interfaces on its SiteLight optical transport platform, a SONET/SDH technique that binds multiple lower-rate paths into a single higher-bandwidth logical link using GFP-F, GFP-T, or POS framing, with LCAS for dynamic bandwidth adjustment. It exposes the mapping of member paths (STS/VT indices) into a VCG stack along with LCAS control-channel state. Its monitoring focus is on logical link integrity and member-path health: vcgStackLcasStatusOper/Admin show whether LCAS is operationally active versus administratively configured, and vcgStackLcasSourceState/vcgStackLcasSinkState reveal whether each member member path is currently added to or held out of the group — a member stuck in a non-active sink state indicates a failed underlying SONET/SDH path reducing the VCG's effective bandwidth. It builds on SONET/SDH concepts (STS, VT) standardized elsewhere and complements other SiteLight transport MIBs. It is deployed on SiteLight nodes carrying data services (Ethernet, Fibre Channel) mapped over SONET/SDH via virtual concatenation. Engineers can download the SL-VCG-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SL-VCG-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Smartoptics SiteLight optical transport platform

Monitoring Examples

An engineer polls vcgStackStatusTable/vcgStackStatusEntry indexed by vcgStackLinkIndex and vcgStackStsIndex to see each member path's vcgStackPathWidth and vcgStackSts1Mapping, then checks vcgStackLcasStatusOper against vcgStackLcasStatusAdmin to confirm LCAS is running as configured. If vcgStackLcasSourceState or vcgStackLcasSinkState for a given member shows it has dropped out of the active group, that member's underlying SONET path has likely failed, reducing the VCG's total available bandwidth even though the logical interface stays up; vcgStackTxSequenceNumber helps correlate sequencing across members during troubleshooting.

What Can Be Monitored

  • VCG member path mapping
  • LCAS operational/admin status
  • member source/sink state
  • path width configuration
  • transmit sequence number

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using vcgLinkCurrentRxVcatSyncLossSeconds OID:

Select a Smartoptics SiteLight optical transport platform (Virtual Concatenation Group/LCAS member-path status) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type vcgLinkCurrentRxVcatSyncLossSeconds into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of seconds a VCAT sync loss was detected during this interval. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
