Category: Enterprise SMI and Registration, Siemens Enterprise

Description: Defines the Siemens AG enterprise SMI root OID hierarchy for network and storage MIBs.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SIEMENS-SMI?

SIEMENS-SMI is the foundational Structure of Management Information module that defines the root object identifier and OID hierarchy for Siemens AG's enterprise MIB tree. It contains no live monitoring data itself; instead it is a structural/organizational MIB that establishes the branch under which Siemens's various network and storage device MIBs register their own object subtrees. Its relevance to monitoring is entirely indirect: every Siemens hardware or software status object -- interface counters, environmental sensors, fault traps -- reported by a Siemens device is ultimately rooted under the OID hierarchy this module defines, so it underpins consistent identification of Siemens equipment across an NMS. As a pure SMI/enterprise-number definition it depends only on the standard SNMPv2-SMI conventions (enterprises.<siemens>) and has no operational dependency of its own. It is referenced wherever Siemens-branded network or storage equipment is managed via SNMP, serving as the common root for vendor-specific MIB trees rather than a device-facing monitoring MIB. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the SIEMENS-SMI file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SIEMENS-SMI. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Siemens AG network and storage equipment (vendor-neutral root definition used across the Siemens product line)

Monitoring Examples

An NMS or MIB browser would use this module's enterprise OID arc to correctly resolve and group all Siemens-specific object identifiers reported by a device, distinguishing them from other vendors' OID spaces. When troubleshooting an unrecognized OID from a Siemens appliance, an administrator would first confirm it falls under this enterprise arc before looking up the specific product MIB that defines it. It provides no monitorable values on its own, only the namespace other Siemens MIBs build upon.

What Can Be Monitored

  • root of Siemens-specific MIB hierarchy
